Catalogue of microbial resources (and associated data)

MIRRI offers its users a single point of access to about 300,000 high-quality microbial resources, an ever-growing number made available by its around 50 partner biorepositories, covering all types of microorganisms, such as bacteria (and their cognate bacteriophages), archaea, fungi (including yeasts), eukaryotic viruses, micro-algae and other microbiological material such as cell lines, natural or constructs carrying plasmids, DNA libraries, and genomic DNA. The MIRRI Information System will also provide users with all relevant information and associated contextual data (metadata) about the microbial resources, as available – e.g. taxonomy, ecology, pathogenicity, morphology, physiology, chemical characterization, DNA barcoding or genomics.

From strains producing antimicrobials or other bioactive compounds for the pharmaceutical industry, to others that can be used in the production of healthier food products, in the biological management of agricultural soils and crops, in the bioremediation of contaminated effluents, or in the production of renewable fuels, to mention a few examples, MIRRI is very likely to hold microbial resources matching every demand from researchers and bioindustries in the sectors of Health & Food, Agro-Food, and Environment & Energy.

Strategic Areas

MIRRI and its partners are, therefore, on a privileged position to collaborate with the bioscience and the bioindustry communities on delivering the maximum value and impact from their projects, technologies and products, most remarkably in the folowing strategic domains/areas:

  • Area 1 | Research on pathogenic microorganisms and human / human-animal infectious diseases
  • Area 2 | Research & development of new (bio)pharmaceuticals / therapeutic solutions – including antimicrobials, vaccines, phage therapies and microbiome therapeutics – for human use
  • Area 3 | Research & development of new, safe, healthy and sustainable food products
  • Area 4 | Resources and methods for biological management of soils and crops
  • Area 5 | Resources and methods for biomonitoring and/or bioremediation of microbial pathogens, persistent organic pollutants and plastics in soils and waters
  • Area 6 | Research & development of renewable green chemistry products and bioenergy sources
• Health & Food        • Agro-food         • Environment & Energy
